As part of our 20th Anniversary celebration in 1994-1995, we instituted the Mount Markham Hall of Fame.  The purpose of this program is to honor graduates from Mount Markham, and the three districts from which it is comprised, who have distinguished themselves in a specific field of endeavor, in civic affairs, in humanitarian affiars, or in activities deemed by the Hall of Fame Committee to merit special recognition.  We believe the Hall of Fame will help develop a more positive climate and bring our community together in sharing the successes of our past graduates. 

A committee of administrators, staff, and community residents select the inductees from nominations submitted by members of the public.  To be eligable for consideration to the Hall of Fame, one must have been a graduate of Mount Markham Central School, Bridgewater Central School, Leonardsville Central School or West Winfield Central School.  Selection is based on a point system with the following criteria:

• Peer recognition of competence in field


• Contribution to store of knowledge and culture


• Contribution to humanity


• Uniqueness of contribution


• Obstacles overcome


• Appeal as a role model

Nomines who are not selected for induction this year will have their applications kept on file for future consideration for five additional years.

A formal indcution into the Hall of Fame is held at graduation exercises in June.  Honorees recieve a plaque etched with a brief description of thier accomplishments.  A duplicate plaque is permanently housed in the Hall of Fame area at the auditorium entrance of the Mount Markham Senior High School.

HENRY G. POLLARD

Class of 1938

A life-long businessman in the insurance and banking industry.  An active participant in community service: Chamber of Commerce, Red Cross, Boy Scouts, the local hospital and library, and the Presbyterian Church.  Awarded various honors for his dedication to his profession and his community.

KARL B. YOUNG

Class of 1968

A Colonel in the United State Air Force working as a Senior Controller responsible for air flight throughout the world.  Recipient of numerous medals and awards including the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Air Force Achievement Medal.  Twice selected as Grade Officer of the year and a member of the Outstanding Young Men of America.

BARBARA M. KOROSEC

Class of 1975

A Commander in the United States Navy currently serving as Senior Lecturer and Course Coordinator at the U.S. Naval Academy.  Three times awarded the Navy Commendation Medal and once the Navy Achievement Medal.  Instrumental in providing leader­ship, guidance, and counsel to women athletes of the U.S. Naval Academy.

STEPHEN NILES

Class of 1970

A member of Youth With A Mission since 1972.  Developed a "half-way house ministry" named Hope House that works with troubled youth and adults.  Mr. Niles has traveled throughout the world helping people develop similar programs as Hope House.  With his family, he continues to fight the war against drugs and ministers to the less fortunate.

LIEUTENANT WALTER J. WILL

Posthumous

Enlisted in the United States Army in 1940 at the age of 17.  As a member of the 18th Infantry Regiment, entered World War II in 1942 and became involved in three major invasions: Africa, Sicily, and Normandy.  Received numerous medals of heroism including the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart.  On March 30, 1945, Lt. Will was killed in action.  For his heroic performance that day, he was awarded the nation's highest military medal, the Congressional Medal of Honor.

ROBERT "BOBBY" HOLMES

Class of 1955

Has dedicated his time, energy, and spirit in preventing the use of drugs, particularly by our youth.  He has carried his anti-drug crusade to children of all ages and founded the Youth Outreach Center for the prevention of drug and alcohol abuse.  The recipient of numerous awards and a profound reputation of a person who cares.

JAMES F. HUXTABLE

Class of 1931

A career in the field of education that spanned five decades, he taught vocational agriculture, economics, social studies, science, and math.  Director of Transportation and Adult Education and owner operator of a large dairy farm.  Founder of Herkimer County Farm Bureau, honored for his commitment to soil and water conservation and a steady voice in local and regional politics.

JOHN RUGGE

Class of 1962

Graduated magna cum laude from Williams College, attended Harvard University and received a doctorate in medicine from Yale University.  A family physician in the Adirondack Mountain region.  Founder of the Hudson Headwaters Health Network, a model for state and federal initiatives.  A consultant to the governor for health related issues.  A writer and film maker of wilderness adventures in the Adirondacks.

DR. DOUGLAS L. LOHNAS

Class of 1971

The consummate educator who has strived to improve the public education profession particularly in the area of mathematics.  Afforded

the opportunity to be a consultant to the International School at Prague.  A certified Lay Speaker in the United Methodist Church and a very active volunteer assisting needy families in the County of Schenectady.

ROXANNE BELLAMY-CAMPBELL, Ph.D.

Class of 1978

A well known consultant on women's issues, drug and alcohol recovery and behavioral disturbances. A devoted educator, lecturer, clinician and psychologist in the human development area.  Affectionately given the nick-name "Mother Teresa" for her love of others and always lending support.

JOHN "PETE” HAMMOND

Class of 1954

The primary editor of The Word In Life Bible. He has traveled throughout the world providing workshops on how to better study and understand the word of God.

In helping others to understand and apply the scripture, he has become a writer, consultant, lecturer and pastor.

HALBERT "BUD" HITEMAN

Class of 1934

Posthumous

Valedictorian of his class, a graduate of Cornell University . Prominent farmer who assisted Near East countries in farming, breeding cattle and development of  cooperatives. A pioneer in the use of plastics in farm operations.  Co-founder of the Upper Unadilla Valley Association and a long time teacher of Social Studies.

KEITH I. MAHON, PH.D.

Class of 1976

A mathematician, researcher, geologist and writer. Received a doctorate degree from UCLA in Philosophy in Geochemistry.  Well-known throughout this country as a geological expert.  Has worked for Hughes Aircraft's Missile Systems Division and Exxon Production Research.  Author of several scientific publications and manuscripts.

DR. EMMA PATTERSON

Posthumous

Graduate of the West Winfield Academy

One of the first female doctors in this area.  Graduated from Albany Medical School in 1927.  She established a family practice in West Winfield that lasted over forty-five years.  Regarded by her medical peers as an excellent diagnostician and fondly remembered by hundreds of families as "Doc Pat".

GARY MORGAN

Class of 1961

A former instructor at the RCA Institute and current Vice President at Gaffney Communications.  Active in regional and state telecommunications councils.  An outstanding leader in his community serving as Justice of the Peace, School Board Member, and participant in several local organizations.  For over forty years has volunteered his time, his expertise and personal equipment to local groups, organizations, churches and the school district.  Has worked tirelessly to help make his community a better place.

DR. THOMAS J. GATES

Class of 1971

A caring and committed physician who has provided medical services and spiritual support in such places as Kenya and Honduras .  Offering his time and expertise, Dr. Gates raised money in the U.S. to help purchase needed medical supplies and food for refugees.  Currently, he is a family doctor in Lancaster , Pennsylvania a leader in the Quaker Church and a writer.

SISTER ELLEN MARIE GIGLIOTTI

Class of 1978

Graduate of Delhi University- degree as Veterinary Technician.  She traveled to Alaska where she worked in her profession.  She participated in Iditarod Dog Sled Race.  Migrated back to NYS and became involved in working with children and community activities.  She went on to receive B.S. in Elem Ed.  Also an accomplished musician.  Sister received a "calling" to a new life and service - entered the convent took vows of poverty and obedience.  Very involved with intercity families and children.  Took her final profession of vows as Franciscan Sister.

DICK L. YOUNG

Class of

Returned to hometown to share his passion for the education of our youth.  Served as the principal and superintendent of the Mount Markham Central School District . Innovative leader supporting creative programs for students at all levels. Mentor to students.  Forward thinker involved in numerous building projects.  Active in school and community by coaching Little League, JV Soccer, American Legion Baseball, coached Varsity Baseball team to schools first section III title.  Involved in Rotary International, the American Heart Association, and local community events.  Speer headed formation of the Mount Markham Foundation and Hall of Fame, actively involved in their fundraisers.

PETER H. SMITH

1947-2003

Posthumous

Graduated West Winfield Central School & Hobart College . Local businessman, outdoorsman, conservation and nature advocate.  Mentor to many young people about conservation and love of nature.  Devoted fireman and long-time Fire Chief.  Founder of “Tanners” Drum and Bugle Corps. Dedicated to community service and volunteerism.
